Looking From The Mine to Sunrise Town

C F & I MINING CAMP

Sunrise Mine and Camp are located at the head of a narrow valley that drains into the North Platte River about a mile above the town of Guernsey in Platte County, Wyoming. At Sunrise this narrow valley opens out a little and in the early days this widened place was forested with large pine trees and was known to early settlers as "Sunrise Park." From this "Sunrise Park" the town was named.

Founded in 1899, by the early 1900s there were four room homes, a boarding house, schoolhouse, and a community building with a hall and reading room. By 1920, further improvements included a YMCA building, parks, a hospital, and a better utility system. The population of Sunrise, Wyoming reached more than 500 individuals by 1920. The mine closed in 1980 and the property is now privately owned.

This is a celebration in front of the new YMCA. Sunrise was a true melting pot of ethnicities and diverse cultures. The residents and early workers at Sunrise included Italians, Greeks, Irish, German, French, Austrians, Swedes, Syria-Lebanese, Japanese, Scandinavians, and English. In later years, an influx of Hispanic families lived and worked there. The other big building in the background is the famous Colorado Supply Company store.
