June 23rd - July 26th

EWC/SHAPPS/Sunrise Field School

Join the Sunrise Field School, a collaboration between Dr. Steven Howard, Eastern Wyoming College, Sunrise and SHAPPS.

This will be a 6-credit and encompassing per credit college field school course running six days a week from June 23 through July 26. The course covers basic laboratory and field methods in archaeology for data collection, analysis and interpretation of cultural material. Emphasis is placed on archaeological questions, scientific methods, heritage preservation and culture change. It also includes basics of site management and directing research. It is primarily designed for anthropology students and/or those students interested in pursuing archaeological fieldwork as either a career or life experience.

Volunteers for Peace with Dr. Steve Howard

Dr. STEVE HOWARD will be hosting volunteers from the Volunteers for Peace (VFP) work camp program for a International / National field study of the Sunrise and Powars II area.

Up to eight volunteers from across the globe will work with the field school students to learn about archaeology, and lend their hands to various improvement projects at Sunrise Mine.

Dr. Bruce Bradley Archaeological Group

Dr. Bruce Bradley along with his team will once again work with George Zeimens to do research at Sunrise, Wyoming. Last year his team included archaeologists from Brazil, Uruguay, and Germany.

July 24th-26th

International & National Symposium

The SHAPPS/EWC Summer Symposium (tentatively themed “Exploring Early Cultures in the Americas”) will involve a reception on the evening on Thursday June 24th, at EWC’s Fine Arts Center with speakers from various countries in the Americas Thursday and Friday evening in the auditorium.

Attendees will also be encouraged to take day shuttles (or drive out if they prefer) on Friday and Saturday to Sunrise Mine for tours and activities, including refreshments.
