About SHAPPS

The Sunrise Historic and Prehistoric Preservation Society (SHAPPS) was established in 2019. Its mission is to preserve, protect, study, and share the rich history and prehistory of Sunrise, Wyoming, and the surrounding region.

Historic Mining in Sunrise

Mining activities in Sunrise have a long and storied past. The area’s historic mining began around 1881, with the initial discovery of copper. However, larger deposits of iron were also found, which attracted the attention of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I). In 1898, CF&I leased the mining claims and started mining iron ore in 1899. These operations continued for several decades until mining officially ended in 1980.

Prehistoric Red Ochre Mining

Long before the advent of modern mining, Sunrise was a significant site for prehistoric mining. Paleo Indians mined red ochre, a natural earth pigment composed of iron oxide, or hematite, on the hillside north of the YMCA building. The prehistoric mine was nearly destroyed during reclamation in 1986 but was saved at the last moment. The site is now recognized as the oldest ochre mine found in North America.
